Protect consumers. Pioneer what's next.
Defendr exists to protect and empower consumers. Essential utilities — mobile, energy, insurance, broadband — are built to keep people paying more than they should. We call it the utility vortex: confusing plans, loyalty penalties, endless comparison, and switching friction that drains time and money while incumbents profit from inertia.
We're here to break that cycle. Trusted AI agents that work for the consumer, not the corporation — watching the market, fighting for fair value, and acting only with explicit consent. Saving people time and money. Giving them back control over the bills that shape their lives.
This is more than a startup. It's a movement at the intersection of consumer rights and cutting-edge technology. Australia can be a global pioneer in agentic commerce at scale — and Defendr intends to lead that charge from the Sunshine Coast.
We're based at the Peregian Beach Digital Hub, building with AI-native workflows and shipping at a pace that punches well above our size. If you want to be part of something that changes how millions of people relate to essential services, read on.
Technical Lead — Platform Architect & Full-Stack Engineer
The Opportunity
You'll be the first engineering hire at an Australian company defining a new category — agentic commerce for utilities. The platform is live, real users are already being served, and the mission is proven. Your job is to make the infrastructure trustworthy and ready for scale, so millions of consumers can delegate their utility decisions to an agent they actually trust.
You'll work directly with the founder, own the technical architecture end to end, and build the platform that turns this movement into something durable. That means reliable systems, transparent user experiences, and engineering discipline that matches the ambition.
This is a hybrid role based out of the Peregian Beach Digital Hub on the Sunshine Coast, with a mix of face-to-face collaboration and remote work. We value output over hours and trust over surveillance.
What You'll Build
- Platform architecture that scales with demand — from early product to infrastructure millions of consumers can rely on
- Reliable agent workflows — long-running processes that survive failures, pause when the user needs to step in, and always show clear progress
- Trust and compliance — consent, auditability, and secure handling of sensitive data in line with what consumers expect
- Transparent experiences — users always know what the agent is doing on their behalf
- Operational maturity — repeatable releases, staging environments, and runbooks that don't depend on one person
- Observability — visibility into success rates and failures before users feel them
- Resilience — redundancy and failover so the service stays up when it matters
Required Experience
- 5+ years in backend or platform engineering, including time as a lead or solo architect
- Full-stack capability — comfortable owning both user-facing product and the systems behind it
- Distributed systems — designing services that scale horizontally and degrade gracefully under load
- Container and orchestration experience — production deployments, autoscaling, and incident response
- Async workflows — job queues, event-driven patterns, and stateful processes that can resume after interruption
- Automated delivery — pipelines that build, test, and deploy without manual intervention
- Cloud infrastructure — networking, load balancing, managed data stores, and cost-aware scaling
- Monitoring and alerting — you design for operability, not just uptime dashboards
- AI-augmented development — you already use AI tools as a core part of how you ship; judgement over autocomplete
Strongly Preferred
- Human-in-the-loop systems where automation pauses for user input and picks up cleanly
- Real-time progress streaming to many concurrent users
- Consumer-facing products in regulated or high-trust domains (utilities, financial services, telco)
- Early-stage startup experience — ambiguity, pace, and wearing multiple hats
How We Work
This is an AI-native team. We expect you to use AI tools as a primary way of working — to move faster, explore options, and ship — while keeping architecture and product judgement firmly human.
You own the what and why; AI helps with the how. You'll work directly with the founder, async-first with regular face-to-face sessions at the Peregian Digital Hub, and full autonomy over technical decisions within the agreed direction.
Interview Process
- Technical conversation (60 min) — how you'd scale a consumer agent platform; architecture and trade-offs, not whiteboard puzzles
- Paid trial task (4–8 hours, compensated) — a real piece of work from the roadmap; use whatever tools you like
- Founder chat (30 min) — alignment on working style, equity, and timeline
